What Are The Mental Health Benefits Of Exercise? 

Most of us are familiar with the physical benefits of exercise, including the way it helps keep people from obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and other serious health problems. What people are less aware of is how exercise can positively impact your life in an array of interesting ways related to mental well-being. 

According to the study Exercise for Mental Health, from the US National Library of Medicine, aerobic exercises have been proven to reduce anxiety and depression. The research determined that such lifts in mood have to with increased blood circulation to the brain, among other factors.

The study states that, “Exercise improves mental health by reducing anxiety, depression, and negative mood and by improving self-esteem and cognitive function. Exercise has also been found to alleviate symptoms such as low self-esteem and social withdrawal.

Additional health benefits from regular exercise include the following, according to the same study: 

  • Improved sleep
  • Weight reduction
  • Improvement in mood
  • An increase in energy and stamina
  • Stress relief
  • Better endurance
  • Increased sexual interest
  • Reduced cholesterol levels

Scientists and psychologists agree that more research needs to be performed on biological link between exercise and mood enhancement, among other benefits. Yet, generally speaking, it’s safe to say that physically active people tend to be happier than their sedentary counterparts. In an American Psychological Association story on the matter, Duke University clinical psychologist James Blumenthal, PhD, had this to say: “There’s good epidemiological data to suggest that active people are less depressed than inactive people. And people who were active and stopped tend to be more depressed than those who maintain or initiate an exercise program.”
